Clarisse was supposed to be executed after her kingdom fell to an invading force, but an unusual law protecting young war captives keeps her alive until she turns eighteen. As a result, she is taken in by Maximilian Sheridan, a duke of the conquering kingdom who is excellent at enforcing justice but completely inexperienced when it comes to raising a child.
